Sad News

This new year didn't start all that well for me. Last Saturday I called my older sister to wish her happy new year and she told me that she was gonna call me. She said she was on the train with our mum on her way to Oulu because our grandma had a stroke and was in the hospital. I said I'd start packing too and caught the next train to the north. Luckily I had four days off so I could spend some time up there. We visited grandma in the hospital for few times. She's not well at all. Her right side is completely paralyzed and she's unable to speak. She did recognize us and it was clear that she was trying hard to say something, but was unable to do so. We also talked to a doctor and found out that granny's also had a pancreatic cancer for the last two years that she hasn't told anyone about (apart from her husband). That was big blow to us all. I really, really hope that this wasn't the last time I saw her.

She's such a wonderful, wonderful lady and it's a miracle she's been able to cope with that cancer so far. She's a tough cookie. On the next school holiday in February we'll all travel to Oulu and hopefully the kids will she her too. The last time we saw her was two and half years ago, before our trip to Australia. Such happy memories:

I'm just really lucky to have had such wonderful grandparents on both sides in my life. And as a kid I've spent a lot of time with them with memories to last a lifetime.

Sorry to hear about your granny Sirpa, and sorry I can't give you much comfort but I can give you my prayers.

Sorry to hear about your Iso äitisi! I hope your trip in Feb goes well and you all get to spend some time with her. All Finnish grannies are the BEST and way strong, so I imagine your Gran is just the same :)

That is really sad news Sirpa. My Dad had a stroke a few weeks ago and now he's an 80% chance for another one which is scary but we pray on .
